Ditch the Gym Membership
filed in Odds and Ends on Mar.21, 2009
As the weather gets warmer all over the country, many are heading out to parks and other recreational spots located in the outdoors to enjoy the sun and fresh air. For those that have gym memberships, this could be a chance to ditch them for a little while and save a few dollars.
For the average person, heading to the gym can run about $50/mth and the time there is mainly spent jogging or some other type of cardio exercise to get the heart rate elevated, fat metabolizing and repeated 3 times a week. This is really great, but with greater sunlight and temperatures outside, a few of my friends have suspended (or ditched) the membership for the next 5 months to take advantage of the “free” gym.
We all have a local park, trail, or quiet neighborhood street that can facilitate for a scenic track for you to job or run along. Normally, my friends do more running and when I asked them, they said that with no set hours like a normal gym, they have the freedom to job whenever their schedule suits them and for longer as there is no sign-up list for a treadmill like many of the popular gyms.
The gym that my friends go to, all have have the ability to either suspend your membership for a few months for free, or in one case, for $5/mth. Both are reasonable options as the savings can really add up. Think about it, $50/mth times 5 months = $250. Now what about if it was for you and your spouse? $500 is a lot of money! You can exercise in a open environment, take in some nature and not have to worry about fitting in a session during gym hours.
Besides jogging, many other outdoor sports can be enjoyed: tennis, a game of baseball, football, soccer, hiking, and many others. Enjoy this summer and ditch that gym membership!
