Its recommended that everyone looks into their credit file atleast once a year to determine anything that might not be correct. For a long time I did not believe this until one day a collections company tried to get in touch with me over an apparent bad loan.

I had no idea, but another person with my name and similar DOB had walked away from a large bank loan and some how this bank mistook the person as being me. It took some time to clear up, but during that time, there was a problem with my otherwise perfect credit score.

Now, once a year I use a source to pull my credit history to inspect and determine as all information as being valid. The last thing anyone wants to do is found out of an error when they are applying for a school loan, mortgage or car loan. Those are the times when you can do without the added stress.

Update, as of 1pm the deal was over. Currently, from my search, the FTC has an approved link on the government website that you can utilize for a free credit check. Basically the government website recommends that you go to: Annual Credit Report

For those in Canada, the process is a little different. You can contact Equifax for a free report that is mailed to you when you print and fillout the pdf supplied on the above link. Or, if its urgent, you can always pay for an online version. I have time, so I use free.
